The First Wave of Attack
In the beginning, not much went right for the U.S. ten of the landing craft that were going to the beach were stopped by the rough sea they were experiencing. The soldiers had a hard time making their way to the beach because they could not see beacause of mist and smoke. The soldiers experienced heavy fire from the Germans once they were about a couple hundred yards away from the beach. The first tank company lost half of its tanks, the other comapnies landed without a major loss. When the infantry began landing they were about 200-300 yards off shore. Each and every boat had a specific assignment or task to accomplish, but because all the boats landed off target, this messed all of the plans up. The most amount of infantry casualties were at the ends of the beach. Only one of the teams could actually function as a unit because the other companies were pinned down(L/16).
